Rethinking Mother’s Day.

I ashamed of myself. I was just in a meeting where I was informed that I would have to come in to work on Mother’s Day in order to monitor a 15 minute flash rave. (Flash Raves are actually highly planned out on our college campus, so really I will have to be around for at least two hours that night.) I started to think about how I would have to have breakfast with the family and not dinner even though that would be the busiest time of the day.

Then I happened to see an article on Huffington Post from a Mother whose daughter passed away two years ago. She spoke about how hard Mother’s Day was as a holiday and I immediately felt ashamed. How dare I even for one minute complain that I have less than a full day allotted to me for the purpose of relishing my hard work, my dedication…I had it all wrong. This isn’t a day of “You owe me” or “Mommy just wants some time to read” or whatever I can come up with to justify because it’s MY day – this is a celebration of life and of the PRIVILEGE  I have in being in a mother. What about women who have been trying to conceive and haven’t yet? Or women whose children are missing?  I feel this is more of a wake up call then anything else.

No longer will I use the day as an excuse to voice unsaid needs. I will use the day to celebrate my role as a mother and embrace the blessings that have been given to me. My heart goes out to all those Mothers out there who will feel the sting of a lost child on Sunday. Bless you and bless all the mothers out there.

My First Five: Repost from Student Affairs Women Talk Tech blog.

My post today from the Student Affairs Women Talk Tech blog:

by Jennifer Keegin

I follow Maria Popova (@brainpicker) on Twitter. She is the founder and editor of Brain Pickings. She writes for WiredUK, The Atlantic, Nieman Journalism Lab, and Design Observer, among others, and is an MIT Futures of Entertainment Fellow.

She recently answered the question: “What are the first five websites you visit every day?” She mentioned Open CultureIts Okay to Be SmartMetaFilter, Andrew Sullivan’s The Dish, and Coudal. After this terribly interesting post, I decided my blog for today would be about my First Five.

  1. The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) The Commons webpage. The Association’s blog of sorts, I always appreciate the posts from other colleagues around the country regarding College Unions and Activities.
  2. Tumblr. I maintain my own blog and our Campus Activities page via Tumblr, but I also love catching up with some of my favorite feeds like NYCgov photos, i love chartsFeel Good Blogs,  Texts from Hillary ClintonDads Are the Original Hipster, and The Kids Should See This.
  3. Design Sponge. This gets my creative juices going and I love it when they imagine living in a film.
  4. I’m trying to avoid mentioning that of course I check Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ ’cause don’t we all? I check my email every morning on my cell as I slowly wake up in the morning. I clean out my mailboxes (I have 5 accounts) and usually this leads to learning about any new comments or etc. that I need to know about with my social networks. So when I actually get to work and turn on my computer, I don’t need to jump right on those sites. However, I usually like to catch up with my friend Jeff Lail, who is posting short video clips everyday via his Google + page. I love getting a dose of his brain every morning just to get me thinking. I wish more folks would do this. Short clips, a topic to ponder for the day.
  5. Huffington Post. I like their various topic pages. TechWomen in TechWomen, and next to CNN and Twitter, its where I go to read the news.

What are YOUR First Five websites?

How Tech has enhanced my life recently.

This post was originally published on the Student Affairs Women Talk Tech blog. I meant to post it a week ago.

Writing blog posts for a women’s blog, a women’s tech blog on a regular basis is challenging, and yet – I always manage to find something that I have inside me that I want to share with other women who are interested in Tech. Here’s what’s on my mind this week:

Social Media Week: I’m knee deep in a week’s worth of events for our University revolving around Social Media. Taking the example of Bridgewater State University, I designed a week’s worth of topics which were turned into “Nooner Events”. LinkedIn, Cyber Stalking, Creating an Online Identity, and Google + Hangouts will all be covered. At first this series of events was created to fulfill the desires of my superiors to see more programming come from Campus Activities separate from the events done by the Dean of Students and the Late Nite Binghamton program. The great thing is that it truly fit with an interest I already have – a passion really – and turn it into something fun to plan. Already today I have conversations with “fringe” students about Social Media (when they just came into the room for free pizza). I’m truly interested to see where this goes by the end of the week. We have blog prompts everyday and also there is a Social Media Challenge where the winner will get a new Kindle Fire.

The Power of Social Media: Our Greek system is currently on lockdown due to numerous reports of serious hazing going on during this pledge session. All pledging has stopped and several incidents are under investigation. The most interesting thing about this situation on this campus is how fast the word got out via social media and the effects it has had on the campus community. In one day I saw the Greek Advisor go from deciding a course of action, to having a plan, to the local newspaper attending the emergency meeting planned for all Greek Presidents. I saw this notice via Twitter. Next thing we knew the next day the University was mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article and then later that day a NY Times article. Then came the slew of parent phone calls and desperate students “dropping” in our office to see who was in trouble. Bad news travels FAST.

Skype: My parents live in Seattle. I live in Upstate NY. We Skype. My daughter has been Skyping since she was two weeks old. But here’s what I found amazing this week. My parents are getting ready to retire this year and sell their house. They are packing everything up to stage the house. Via Skype my mother was able to show me items that she wanted to know if I wanted to save or not. This cut out so much time. Instead of writing a list of items down, or taking pictures of everything – she was able to go through three large containers full of cassette tapes to see if I still wanted them. (I have a cassette player in my car. It was a used car when I bought it.) This would have been so much more complicated without Skype.

So that’s what’s on my brain this week. Has Tech enhanced your life this week?

#SMWbingU Blog Prompt Day #2 – If you could Skype or Hangout w/anyone – who and why?

If you could Skype or Google + Hangout with anyone living today – who would it be and why?

Tina Fey Part One

Tina Fey Part Two

I would love to Skype Tina Fey. She’s my hero. Ever since she became the news person on Saturday Night Live – I’ve just watched her and learned. Learned that you can wear glasses and have brown hair and be smart and witty and hilarious. (Granted I think Rachel Maddow also achieves most of this, but Tina is more my level and I can relate). I learned that deciding to have a second child is something that isn’t just a completely easy/done decision and that it takes alot of thought and care.

What would we talk about? I would probably just let her talk about her day. Work, kids – whatever. I think I could listen to her talk about cleaning the bathroom she’s so funny. I might ask her about her worries and hopes for her daughters and stuff like that.

Who would YOU Skype or Hangout with?

#SMWbingU Blog Prompt #1 – How does Social Media fit into your life?

As the creator of Social Media Week (for Binghamton University’s campus, I am in no way a trailblazer with Social Media Weeks), I felt it necessary to lead the way in encouraging blogs and blogging during Social Media Week. All blogs that I find out about via Facebook and Twitter, I will be listing on the Campus Activities Blog It Out! page.

How does Social Media fit into your life?

Since this may be the first time some folks have ever visited my .com site and might not know me – I can tell you that social media plays a huge part of my life. I was a Mass Communication major in college and that was right when “the internet” became a thing. I took a course on html and that’s back in the day when you could put words on a screen with a background image and everyone thought that was amazing.

I joined Facebook in 2006 because back then, you could look to see what all the users for your university liked. Top movies, top musicians etc. As the University Programming Board advisor, that was valuable information. It became so valuable that you can’t get that kind of info anymore.

A co-worker that no longer works at Binghamton U taught me about Twitter. I didn’t really get Twitter until Jon Stewart came to campus and I realized that I could tweet something unique – a behind-the-scenes look at what was going on backstage. Now-a-days I like Twitter even more than Facebook. The information you can get instantly off Twitter is so much more valuable. And witty.

I use Facebook primarily for friends and family only. Twitter is used for information sharing and my network includes other student affairs professionals, friends, family, and people in other professions that I can learn from. Yes, I follow a bunch of celebrities and businesses too.

I am also on Google +, but I haven’t put much time and effort into really grooming my circles although I have gotten better at it. I feel as a women it’s important to get on a social network mostly dominated by men, but feel that I enjoy Pinterest.com WAY more. Who’s with me?

So that’s a brief look at how social media and social networks fit into my life. I hope others in the Binghamton community will participate in Blog It Out! and will respond to our daily blog prompts.

Here’s to blogging!
